The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) on December 24, 2025, issued the SOP for Date of Birth update in Aadhaar.
The following has been stated namely: -
• It has issued a comprehensive Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for updating Date of Birth (DoB) in the Aadhaar database, replacing earlier guidance and formalising how DoB corrections or updates are to be processed. An Aadhaar number holder can update their DoB mainly in three scenarios:
o when the current DoB is recorded as “declared” or “approximate,”
o when an error occurred due to an operator/holder mistake, or
o when the previously submitted document was incorrect, and the correct document is now available.
• A Birth Certificate issued under the Registration of Births and Deaths Act, 1969, is treated as the primary legal proof of DoB; for minors (0–18 years), it is mandatory for DoB updates. If the holder previously submitted a non-birth certificate document (like a passport or mark sheet), they shall now submit either a corrected version of that document or a Birth Certificate to support the new DoB update.
• The SOP also provides exception handling procedures where, in genuine cases of operator error or previous incorrect entries, a self-declaration affidavit may be accepted alongside valid proof, with clear stipulations that only one further DoB update opportunity is permitted and any fraudulent attempts can lead to Aadhaar deactivation and legal action.
• Detailed case-wise guidelines ensure that UIDAI officials and enrolment centre operators consistently apply criteria to validate DoB submissions and protect the integrity of the Aadhaar database.
