Labour ComplianceThe Government of Meghalaya, on September 10, 2025, introduced the Factories (Meghalaya Amendment) Bill, 2025 to amend the Factories Act, 1948 in its application to the State of Meghalaya, with the objective of strengthening administrative flexibility and aligning factory regulation with contemporary operational requirements.

The Bill amends Section 8 of the Principal Act to empower the State Government not only to appoint inspectors for the purposes of the Act but also to empanel third-party agencies, subject to terms and conditions imposed by the State Government, thereby enabling improved inspection, compliance monitoring, and enforcement mechanisms.

Further, the Bill amends Section 54 by inserting a new sub-section (2), authorising the State Government to extend the daily maximum hours of work up to ten hours, inclusive of intervals for rest, through notification in the Official Gazette, providing regulated flexibility in working hours while retaining statutory oversight.
