The Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways (MoPS&W) on January 12, 2026, notified the Recycling of Ships Regulations, 2026.
The following has been stated: -
•The Recycling of Ships Regulations, 2026 provide a regulatory framework for safe and environmentally sound recycling of ships in India, in line with international standards.
•They mandate compliance with the Hong Kong International Convention, including preparation and maintenance of an Inventory of Hazardous Materials (IHM).
•Ship recycling yards must be authorized, follow approved Ship Recycling Facility Plans, and adhere to strict safety, health, and environmental norms.
•The regulations assign responsibilities to ship owners, recycling facilities, and authorities for certification, inspection, and monitoring.
•Penalties and enforcement mechanisms are prescribed to ensure compliance and prevent environmental damage and worker hazards.
They shall come into force from January 14, 2026.
