Industry Specific ComplianceThe Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) on January 14, 2026, issued the Draft Central Motor Vehicles (………. Amendment) Rules, 2026, to further amend the Central Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989.

The following has been amended namely: -

• Under the Rule 126E the following has been inserted namely: -

“(10) On and after 1st October 2027, the applicable standard for the assessment of Bharat New Car Assessment Program as defined in item (2), (4) and (7) above shall be as per AIS-197 (Rev. 1), as amended from time to time”

• Rule 125-C which states “Body building and approval” the following sub-rule has been inserted namely: -

“(8) All Type-I buses, on and after 1st April 2026 in case of new models and 1st October 2026 in case of all models, shall conform to the requirements of AIS-216, as amended from time to time. 

Provided that on and after 1st October 2026, all Type-I buses, as specified in sub-rule (8) above, with length 9 m and above, shall have floor height of 400 mm”
