The Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution (MoCAF&PD) on January 16, 2026, notified regarding the amendment to Wheat Stock Limits under the Essential Commodities Act.
The following has been stated namely: -
• The Central Government has amended the wheat stock limit provisions under the Essential Commodities Act, 1955, extending their applicability up to March 31, 2026, for all States and Union Territories.
• Revised stock limits are prescribed for traders/wholesalers (2000 MT), retailers (8 MT per outlet), big chain retailers (8 MT per outlet, subject to an overall cap based on the number of outlets), and processors (60% of the monthly installed capacity multiplied by the remaining months till April 2026).
• All concerned entities are required to declare and regularly update their wheat stock positions on the Department of Food and Public Distribution portal.
• Any excess stock shall be reduced to the prescribed limits within 15 days from the date of notification.
