The Ministry of Power (MoP) on January 19, 2026, issued the Guidelines for the Type Tests for Major Equipment of the Power Sector.
The following has been stated namely: -
• The Guidelines aim to bring uniformity, rationality, and clarity in the validity and periodicity of type tests for major power sector equipment. The guidelines recognise type tests as design and quality validation tests conducted in accredited laboratories and clarify that repeated type testing is generally not required unless there is a change in design, material, manufacturing process, or relevant standards.
• They seek to reduce unnecessary repetition of type tests, ease pressure on testing infrastructure, lower costs and timelines for manufacturers and utilities, and ultimately benefit end consumers.
• The guidelines lay down broad principles on where and how type tests should be conducted (preferably in India, in NABL-accredited labs; foreign labs where facilities are unavailable), acceptance of in-house tests under accredited conditions, documentation and traceability requirements, and conditions under which existing type test reports remain valid.
• Importantly, the guidelines prescribe equipment-wise validity periods for type test reports across the Transmission, Distribution, Thermal, and Hydro sectors through detailed annexures. These validity periods typically range from 5 to 20 years, depending on the nature and criticality of the equipment (e.g., transformers, circuit breakers, GIS, meters, DG sets, turbines, generators, and auxiliaries).
• Special sector-specific provisions, particularly for hydro projects, acknowledge project-specific designs where uniform type test periodicity is not feasible.
• Overall, the guidelines provide a structured, transparent framework for acceptance and periodicity of type tests, balancing quality assurance with efficiency and practicality.
