The Ministry of Communications (MoC) on January 20, 2026, issued the Use of Low Power and Very Low Power Wireless Access System, including Radio Local Area Network in the Lower 6 GHz band (Exemption from Licensing Requirement) Rules, 2026.
This shall take effect on January 21, 2026.
The following has been stated namely: -
• The rules exempt users from licensing and frequency assignment requirements for operating low-power indoor and very low-power outdoor wireless access systems, including Wi-Fi, in the 5925–6425 MHz band.
• The rules permit such use on a non-interference, non-protection, and shared basis, subject to strict technical limits on power, emission bandwidth, and out-of-band emissions.
• They prescribe maximum EIRP and power spectral density limits, mandate the use of contention-based protocols, and impose operational restrictions, including prohibition of use on oil platforms, vehicles, boats, aircraft (below 10,000 feet), and for drone communications.
• The rules also establish detailed emission suppression norms, interference mitigation obligations (including relocation, power reduction, or discontinuation if harmful interference occurs), and require type approval of equipment with integrated antennas in compliance with national and international safety standards.
• Overall, the rules aim to enable wider deployment of high-speed wireless technologies while safeguarding licensed spectrum users.
