The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEF&CC) on September 30, 2025, issued a notification regarding the categorization of expansion of airports without an increase in land area, as B2 projects.
The following has been stated: -
•Airports fall under Item 7(a) of EIA Notification, 2006, and expansion normally requires Environmental Clearance (EC).
•AAI sought relaxation for expansion activities within existing airport boundaries without any additional land acquisition.
•Expert Committees found such activities unlikely to cause significant new environmental impacts and noted existing regulatory controls.
•Accordingly, airport expansion/modernization within existing land and with valid ECs shall be categorized as Category B2 projects.
