The Government of Bihar, on February 24, 2026, issued the Bihar Municipal (Amendment) Bill, 2026, to amend the Bihar Municipal Act, 2007.
The following has been stated: -
•The Act aims to ensure transparency in forming the Empowered Standing Committee by replacing nomination by the Mayor/Chairman with election through a secret ballot by Councillors under District Magistrate supervision.
•Existing committees will be dissolved and reconstituted within six months of commencement.
•MPs/MLAs are exempted from attending meetings during legislative sessions and may nominate non-voting representatives.
•The 2025 Ordinance is repealed, with prior actions deemed valid under the new Act.
