The Government of Maharashtra, on February 24, 2026, notified the Maharashtra Municipal Councils, Nagar Panchayats and Industrial Townships (Amendment) Bill, 2026, further to amend the Maharashtra Municipal Councils, Nagar Panchayats, and Industrial Townships Act, 1965
The following has been stated: -
•The amendment to the Maharashtra Municipal Councils, Nagar Panchayats, and Industrial Townships Act, 1965, allows a person elected as both President and Councillor to hold both posts simultaneously.
•However, such a person will have only one vote, either as President or Councillor.
•In case of a tie, the President will exercise a casting vote.
•The Act replaces the Maharashtra Municipal Councils, Nagar Panchayats, and Industrial Townships (Third Amendment) Ordinance, 2025, while saving actions taken under the Ordinance.
It shall be deemed to have come into force on December 26, 2025.
