The Andaman and Nicobar Administrator on January 28, 2026, issued the Draft Code on Wages (A & N Islands) Rules, 2026.
The following has been stated:
• The rules regulate the fixation and payment of minimum wages, working hours, wage deductions, record maintenance, and enforcement mechanisms for employers and employees.
• They ensure that minimum wages fixed by the administration are not lower than the floor wage determined by the Central Government and that wages are determined considering factors such as family consumption, housing, clothing, fuel, education, and medical expenses.
• The rules also prescribe working conditions, including a maximum of 48 working hours per week, mandatory rest intervals, and a weekly rest day.
• Employers shall maintain wage registers, issue wage slips to employees, and preserve records for inspection. Deductions from wages cannot exceed 50% of the wages in a wage period, and excess deductions shall be carried forward.
• Authorities such as the Inspector-cum-Facilitator and labour authorities are empowered to inspect establishments, address wage-related complaints, and enforce compliance with the Code.
