The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoH&FW) on March 10, 2026, issued a notification regarding the expansion of Medical Colleges and Seats in India.
The following has been stated: -
•A total of 43 new medical colleges have been established in India for the Academic Year 2025–26, with approval for 11,682 MBBS seats and 8,967 PG seats.
•The National Medical Commission (NMC) processes applications for new colleges and seat increases based on regulatory standards and assessments.
•The government also runs a Centrally Sponsored Scheme to establish medical colleges attached to district/referral hospitals, prioritizing underserved areas.
•Under this scheme, 157 medical colleges have been approved with a total cost of ₹41,332.41 crore, out of which ₹23,246.10 crore has been released so far.
