The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) on March 11, 2026, notified the Food Safety and Standards (Licensing and Registration of Food Businesses) Amendment Regulations, 2026, further to amend the Food Safety and Standards (Licensing and Registration of Food Businesses) Regulations, 2011.
The following has been stated: -
•The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India amended the Food Safety and Standards (Licensing and Registration of Food Businesses) Regulations, 2011 to update definitions and procedures for food business registration and licensing.
•The definition of “Petty Food Business Operator” has been revised to include petty retailers, street food vendors, hawkers, food trucks, and vendors operating in temporary stalls or social/religious gatherings.
•Street vendors registered under the Street Vendors (Protection of Livelihood and Regulation of Street Vending) Act, 2014, will be deemed registered under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, subject to hygiene and sanitary requirements.
•The Food Authority may grant instant registration, specify turnover thresholds, eligibility conditions, and licensing authorities for different food businesses.
•New provisions introduce risk-based inspections and food safety audits, and licenses may be deemed suspended if fees or required returns are not submitted on time.
They shall come into force on March 12, 2026.
