The Health, Medical Education and Family Welfare Department, on March 2, 2026, issued a notification declaring snakebite cases and deaths as a Notifiable Disease in the state, in line with the national initiative under the “National Action Plan for Prevention & Control of Snakebite Envenoming (NAPSE) 2030”.
The notification highlights the high burden of snakebite incidents in India, particularly affecting rural and tribal populations, and emphasizes the need for timely medical intervention. Under the National Health Mission, the Snake Bite Prevention & Control Programme ensures availability of Anti-Snake Venom at healthcare facilities and promotes awareness on proper treatment protocols, discouraging reliance on traditional or unscientific remedies.
It mandates all government and private healthcare institutions—including hospitals, labs, and medical colleges—to report suspected and confirmed snakebite cases and deaths to district authorities. Data must be maintained and uploaded on the IDSP-IHIP portal, with periodic reporting requirements. This step aims to strengthen surveillance, improve treatment response, and support policy planning to reduce snakebite mortality and morbidity in the state.
