The Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board (TNPCB) on March 14, 2026, issued temporary relaxation for Use of Alternate Fuels by Industries amid Gas Supply Disruptions.
In light of the ongoing geopolitical tensions in the Middle East causing significant disruption in global gas supply, industries are likely to face adverse impacts on production. To ensure continuity of industrial operations and prevent economic slowdown, the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board has issued temporary relief measures.
Industries currently dependent on gas-based utilities are now permitted to switch to alternative fuels such as kerosene, High Speed Diesel (HSD), Furnace Oil, Refuse Derived Fuel (RDF), and biomass. Importantly, industries are not required to obtain a separate Consent to Operate for using these alternate fuels during this period. However, they must inform the Board with complete details including the utility name, capacity, and type and quantity of fuel used.
This relaxation is temporary and will remain in force for a period of three months from the date of issuance. The Board will review the situation after one month and may issue further directions based on prevailing conditions.
