The Government of Maharashtra on May 05, 2026, issued the Maharashtra State Compressed Biogas (CBG) Policy, 2026.
Under this government decision, the "Maharashtra State Congressional Biogas Policy, 2026" is being formulated and its objectives are as follows:-
• To promote the production and use of compressed biogas as a clean, renewable and indigenous fuel alternative for industrial, transport and domestic use.
• Promote compressed biogas production using municipal solid waste, agricultural residues, livestock waste, agricultural produce market waste and sugar industry residues, and reduce environmental pollution by reducing open burning of waste.
• To provide additional income to farmers through value addition of agricultural residues and bio-waste and to boost the rural economy.
• To promote employment generation and entrepreneurship in rural and urban areas through the establishment of compressed biogas projects.
• To contribute to India's goal of achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2070 by reducing Maharashtra's dependence on fossil fuels.
• To create integrated infrastructure for raw material collection, processing and distribution by developing compressed biogas clusters (CBG hubs) as per the requirement in areas with high biomass availability.
• Enabling the supply chain of collection, storage and transportation for sustainable supply of biomass and organic waste.
• Promoting research, innovation and modern technologies (such as anaerobic digestion, gas purification and bio-fertilizer recovery) in the field of bioenergy.
• Creating a policy environment conducive to public-private partnerships, private investment and entrepreneurship.
• By cultivating energy crops, non-edible oil seeds, etc. on barren and unusable land.
