The Government of Sikkim, Law & Parliamentary Affairs Department (LA&PD), on March 20, 2026, promulgated the Sikkim Municipalities (Amendment) Ordinance, 2026 under Article 213 of the Constitution of India. The Ordinance was issued as the Legislative Assembly was not in session and immediate action was considered necessary.
The Ordinance amends the Sikkim Municipalities Act, 2007 primarily to increase the maximum number of wards in a Municipal Corporation from 19 to 21, thereby enabling greater representation. It also introduces a new definition of “election” to clarify that it includes the entire process of filling seats in a municipality.
The Ordinance comes into force immediately upon promulgation and updates relevant provisions in Sections 2, 8, and 13 of the principal Act to reflect the enhanced ward limit and definitional clarity.
