The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) on May 05, 2026, issued the notification regarding the ‘Significant Indices’ under SEBI (Index Providers) Regulations, 2024.
The following has been stated namely: -
• SEBI has introduced the SEBI (Index Provider) Regulations, 2024 to improve transparency, governance, and accountability in the administration of indices used in the Indian securities market.
• An index will be classified as a “Significant Index” if the average cumulative mutual fund AUM tracking or benchmarking it exceeds ₹20,000 crore for each of the past six months, reviewed every half-year ending June 30 and December 31.
• Once classified as a Significant Index, it will remain so unless the AUM falls below the threshold continuously for three years (six consecutive half-yearly reviews).
• Index Providers offering Significant Indices listed by SEBI must apply for registration with SEBI within six months of the circular, except for indices already recognized by RBI as Significant or Authorized Benchmarks under the RBI Act.
• SEBI-registered entities conducting index provider activities departmentally must create a separate legal entity within two years, and grievance redressal provisions under the regulations will apply only to SEBI-registered Significant Indices.
This shall come into force on May 05, 2026.
