The Ministry of Law and Justice (MLJ), on May 15, 2026, promulgated the Lakshadweep Fire and Emergency Service Regulation, 2026 to establish a comprehensive legal framework for maintenance of fire and emergency services, fire prevention, and life safety measures across the Union Territory of Lakshadweep. The Regulation has been issued by the President under Article 240 of the Constitution and will come into force from a date notified by the Administrator.
The Regulation provides for establishment and administration of the Lakshadweep Fire and Emergency Service, including appointment of Director/Chief Fire Officer, Fire Officers, Fire Safety Officers, and establishment of fire stations and emergency response infrastructure. It also defines key terms relating to buildings, occupiers, fire prevention measures, emergencies, firefighting property, and disaster response mechanisms.
Further, the Regulation empowers authorities to undertake fire safety enforcement, investigate fire incidents, establish operational and training frameworks, coordinate emergency response activities, and implement fire prevention standards. Employees of the service will be governed by applicable Central Civil Services Rules, and the administration may formulate rules relating to recruitment, service conditions, uniforms, operational procedures, and fire safety compliance requirements.
