The Department of Revenue and Disaster Management, Govt. of Puducherry on May 04, 2026, issued the Draft Puducherry Legal Metrology (Enforcement) (Second Amendment) Rules, 2026, further to amend the Puducherry Legal Metrology (Enforcement) Rules, 2011.
The following has been stated:
• The amendments provide that manufacturers, repairers, and dealers of weights and measures shall apply for licences online through a government-notified portal. Manufacturers repairing their own weights and measures outside the state will no longer require a separate repair licence, though they shall inform the concerned Legal Metrology Officer. Individuals repairing weights or measures owned by themselves in good faith will also be exempted from licensing requirements.
• The draft rules further propose that licences issued to manufacturers, repairers, and dealers will remain valid for life unless suspended or cancelled, subject to payment of annual online fees. Licences will not be transferable and shall be displayed prominently at business premises.
• A major amendment relates to verification procedures for weights and measures. Low-risk weights and measures listed in the newly inserted Schedule I-A, such as bullion weights, beam scales, non-automatic weighing instruments, water meters, taxi meters, thermometers, and peg measures, will be allowed self-certification through a prescribed self-declaration format.
The last date for submitting objections or suggestions is May 14, 2026.
