The Meghalaya State Pollution Control Board (MPCB) on June 04, 2026, notified regarding the Prohibition of Waste Dumping and Pollution in Umkhen River Catchment, Meghalaya.
Following a joint inspection conducted on May 15, 2026, authorities observed indiscriminate dumping of mixed solid waste along a stream tributary to the Umkhen River near the Assam Regimental Centre in Shillong. Such activities, including disposal of polluting matter and washing of vehicles in the stream, were found to be degrading water quality and harming aquatic life.
In response, the Meghalaya State Pollution Control Board has issued strict directions under the Water Act, 1974 and Air Act, 1981, prohibiting disposal of waste in streams and surrounding areas. The order reinforces compliance with Solid Waste Management Rules, 2026, mandating proper waste segregation, banning littering, burning, or dumping in public spaces and water bodies, and requiring local authorities to ensure enforcement. Violators will face penalties under Section 43 of the Water Act, including fines ranging from ₹10,000 up to ₹15 lakh, along with additional daily penalties for continued violations.
