The Union Territory of Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu, on June 17, 2026, has notified the Draft Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu Legal Metrology (Enforcement) Amendment Rules, 2026, introducing a comprehensive framework for the regulation, verification, registration, and enforcement of weights and measures.
The following has been stated:
The rules prescribe procedures for maintaining reference, secondary, and working standards; verification and re-verification requirements; registration of manufacturers, repairers, and dealers; audit and record-keeping obligations; and conditions governing the use of weights and measures in trade and consumer transactions.
Further, the key provisions include the validity of registration certificates until cancellation, qualification requirements for manufacturers, repairers, and Legal Metrology Officers, periodic verification timelines for various weights and measuring instruments, mandatory re-verification after repair or reinstallation, and enhanced compliance obligations for users and businesses. The rules also provide for suspension or cancellation of registrations for non-compliance, prescribe penalties for violations, and establish procedures for appeals, fee collection, and compounding of offences. The amendment aims to strengthen accuracy, transparency, and consumer protection in commercial transactions involving weights and measures across the Union Territory.
The rules extend to the whole of U.T. of Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu and shall come into force on such date as the Administrator may, by notification, appoint, and different dates may be appointed for different provisions of these rules.
