The Directorate of Social Welfare, Andaman & Nicobar Administration (DSW), in June 2026, issued a public notice informing transgender persons residing in the Union Territory of Andaman & Nicobar Islands that they may apply online for a Transgender Identity Certificate under the Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Act, 2019 through the designated Transgender Portal of the Government of India.
The Administration stated that the Transgender Identity Certificate provides legal recognition of an individual's gender identity and facilitates access to various welfare schemes, benefits, and entitlements available to transgender persons. Eligible individuals have been encouraged to submit applications through the online portal.
To support implementation, applicants may seek assistance from the concerned Deputy Commissioner's Office or the Directorate of Social Welfare. The Administration has also appealed to Panchayati Raj Institutions (PRIs), community leaders, and civil society organizations to spread awareness and encourage eligible persons to avail themselves of the benefit.
