The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), on June 17, 2026, issued revised NETC (National Electronic Toll Collection) Guidelines for Transaction Re-Initiation, directing all member banks to implement standardized procedures for handling technical failures and re-initiating transactions.
Under the guidelines, member banks must verify site health status, transaction status, and FASTag status before re-initiating requests. For HTTP error codes 4xx (network fluctuations) and 5xx (service or site unavailability) received from both active sites, banks are required to continue re-initiating requests every 180 seconds until a successful HTTP response code of 200 or 202 is received. Similarly, for NETC Error Code 134 (Component Dependency Failure), banks must continue re-initiating requests at 180-second intervals until a successful response is obtained.
NPCI has also directed banks to undertake periodic reconciliation of all requests submitted to NETC. Where legitimate transactions are found to have been declined due to specific response or error code patterns, banks must promptly re-initiate such transactions within the prescribed turnaround time (TAT), thereby minimizing reliance on special window requests and reducing associated liabilities. The revised re-initiation logic is required to be implemented by all member banks with immediate effect.
