The Government of Sikkim on May 02, 2026, notified regarding the implementation of the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2026.
The following has been stated:
• The Government, in compliance with the Supreme Court's order dated February 19, 2026, in Civil Appeal No. 6174 of 2023 (Bhopal Municipal Corporation vs. Dr. Subhash C. Pandey & Others), has empowered District Collectors to ensure effective implementation of the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2026.
• Collectors have been directed to enforce Rule 37, oversee solid waste management by urban and rural local bodies, conduct quarterly performance reviews, ensure convergence of sanitary landfills and common waste processing facilities, report non-compliance to the concerned departments, submit quarterly reports to the Chief Secretary, conduct infrastructure audits, and ensure preparation and implementation of village-level solid waste action plans to achieve 100% compliance, while eliminating open dumping and burning of waste.
