rong>The Central Electricity Authority (CEA) on July 08, 2026, issued the advisory on safe and judicious use of electricity in view of El Niño conditions or otherwise.
The following has been stated:
• In view of the India Meteorological Department's (IMD) forecast of above-normal temperatures due to El Niño conditions, the CEA has issued an advisory urging consumers and Distribution Companies (DISCOMs) to adopt preventive electrical safety measures to reduce the risk of overheating, electrical faults and fire incidents caused by increased use of air conditioners and other cooling appliances.
• Consumers are advised to keep their connected load within the sanctioned limit, ensure adequately rated internal wiring, avoid overloading sockets, maintain air conditioners and electrical appliances regularly, install properly rated Miniature Circuit Breakers (MCBs) and Residual Current Devices (RCDs), ensure proper earthing, and immediately address warning signs such as sparking, overheating, burning smell or frequent tripping.
• DISCOMs have been advised to closely monitor the loading of transformers, cables and other electrical infrastructure and undertake timely replacement before equipment reaches its threshold capacity.
• The advisory also recommends maintaining AC temperature at 24°C, switching off appliances when not in use, and promoting optimal electricity usage to enhance consumer safety and prevent electrical accidents during periods of extreme heat.
