The Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB) on July 06, 2026, has issued guidance regarding the increasing use of Handheld Diagnostic X-ray Equipment (HDXE) in medical imaging. It has been observed that due to ease of operation, such devices are being widely used; however, they pose challenges to key radiation safety principles such as maintaining adequate distance and shielding, potentially increasing radiation exposure to operators.
The authority has clarified that HDXE should not replace fixed or mobile X-ray units for general diagnostic purposes. Its use should be restricted to situations where conventional equipment is impractical, such as in remote areas, emergency cases, or for patient screening campaigns. In such screening applications, advanced AI-based detectors help reduce radiation exposure, and the use of TLD badges is not mandatory due to lower dose levels.
Detailed guidance has been issued for licensees and operators, including mandatory licensing, use of protective lead aprons, ensuring trained personnel, and use of immobilization stands during exposure. Additionally, HDXE should only be used as supplementary equipment, with periodic quality assurance tests required to ensure safety and compliance.
