The Ministry of Defence (MoD), on July 28, 2026, issued a draft notification proposing the Jalandhar Cantonment Building Bye-Laws, 2026 under Section 251 of the Cantonments Act, 2006, in supersession of the building bye-laws notified on May 26, 1937. The draft has been published for public consultation, and stakeholders may submit objections or suggestions within 30 days from the date the Gazette is made available to the public.
The proposed bye-laws will apply throughout the Jalandhar Cantonment and will come into force upon their final publication in the Official Gazette. They establish a comprehensive regulatory framework governing building construction, reconstruction, alterations, approvals, land use, and development controls. The draft also introduces detailed definitions relating to buildings, architects, building height, floor area ratio (FAR), floor space index (FSI), setbacks, occupancy, commercial and residential buildings, and other planning and engineering concepts to facilitate uniform implementation.
The draft seeks to modernize the regulatory framework governing construction activities within Jalandhar Cantonment by replacing the outdated 1937 bye-laws with provisions aligned to the Cantonments Act, 2006 and contemporary building standards. It aims to promote planned development, improve safety and regulatory clarity, and streamline the building approval process while incorporating modern planning, structural, and accessibility requirements.
